Week 2 - December 13 RECORDING COMPLETE and Available at $69 Marbling on Fabric a Crash Course - Stella & Larissa Don #samarbling
Our 2nd Week Teaching of our 8 week course is a Practical Session learning the In's and Out's of Fabric Marbling. A basic Knowledge of marbling is recommended but many of the general terminologies are explained along with an interactive session with Larissa and Stella Don of The SA Marbling Company - South Africa and 10 experienced international marblers and eco textile artists who asked many interesting questions. We worked with 3 acrylics paints and learnt how to adjust the spread by first using water to get the correct viscosity and then adding surfactants to speed them up even more if needed. How do you make clear liquid and how to make kitchen tools - how to dance with your marbling and make it your own. We will focus on the design and patterning in January. This is to get everyone on the same page - we are doing contemporary marbling. Make the Process your Own... We worked with a selection of fabrics keeping focus on our client sampling for performance art, events and couture. Our objective was to establish which acrylic paint would work best on lycra, denim, ribbon and voiles for instance. 3 hours went by Far to Fast but we worked through the process step by step focusing on getting a take on the fabric with our acrylic paints. It was a Marbler's Experimental Journey with lots to learn about getting your paints to float for transfer. We didn't have enough time to cover the Basics of Suminagashi so we will cover this subject in the next week. Soooooo.... Next Week we will be doing an intro to Traditional Suminagashi using black Japanese Inks AND simply touching on coloured suminagashi on Fabrics and Paper. We won't have enough time to cover in debt this time. We will also unwrap a couple of eco bundles and discuss the process and look at the marbling results from Today. It all would have cured by now so lets look at them and decide what is in and what is out. Thanks again from Stella and The Me - Making That Circle Bigger and Spreading The Love for Water. Making some moves towards Marbling the Moon. TIME - 2hrs.55min

Suminagashi PART 2 - Coloured Inks on Fabric in Larger Tanks RECORDING COMPLETE and Available at $30
A Massive Surge disconnected our Teaching for a few minutes but everyone hung in there and we continued ... So this is PART 2 of the same Teaching on Western Suminagashi, Here we Look at Coloured Inks and how to mix them. We explore mediums and dilution methods to enable us to use the inks for suminagashi. What happens when we move to a bigger tank and how do you keep your inks floating while executing design. Larissa shows examples of designs and pull out some larger fabrics to quickly discuss large scale work and demonstrates a more planned design which would be transferred onto linen and be used for upholstery for instance. You will leave empowered to take on Suminagashi and swim with the tide. It's a Massive Subject which we will expand on during January when the larger trays come out but this lines you up for that. You'll know what is what.. we can just jump into different techniques with the paints already mixed and ready before hand. This explains how to get yourself ready and going. Week 4 - December 27 RECORDING COMPLETE and Available at $69 This week is an intense theoretical look at our clients and industries of choice for 2021. It is the end of 2020. We have been busy with an 8 week course on hand printing techniques with the focus on suminagashi, marbling and eco printing on mainly fabric.
Firstly we look at concepts of design and how to morph classic patterns which are designed in square for book paper to circular patterns for instance. Altering of Design? Which fabrics and which paints show best results after testing and experimentation from our marbling session several weeks ago. We discuss the dance/action & performance industry in depth and who to approach for optimum earning results. How do you adjust and change your approach for your own local clients or industry of choice? Secondly we look at a new bespoke commission for a local designer whose fabrics and paints will be arriving soon. We look at costing and build up of the print run and what we will be getting ready. How the process of production will commence. We will be doing the sampling of design during our interactive session in Week 6/7 among other things. A Great time is spent hearing what is happening around the globe for each participant and how business needs to be adjusted to make or break in these testing times. The Input each hand printer gives is invaluable. Thank you to you All for that !! After our Break we look at our marbling from the experimental crash course marbling session and decide what's in and what's out? Which paints or techniques will work best for each during production and what is the vision for 2021. Lastly we talk about a new vision within the cannabis industry in SA. The possibilities of presenting our services and techniques to a particular Fashion House who is interested in including hand printing in their ethical fashion range. We look at the blend of bold graphic African prints and how to combine it with particular marbling. suminagashi and eco printed options. Brilliant Input follows in our Q&A Session at the end. A great time spent together considering our options in the hand printing industry and how even sublimation houses might get affected during this pandemic.. how fresh is fresh and time frames to work on. New Ideas and Things to Consider !! Salute !! Thanks from Stella and I. Thanks for linking up on this Journey with us !! TIME: 3hrs 9min
WHAT IS STILL COMING UP NEXT ? Week 5 - January 3 Week 5 of a Comprehensive 8 Week course on Production within Hand Textile Printing. Focusing on Marbling, Suminagashi and Eco Printing for usable fabrics within various Industries. This week Links up with the Very first - Week 1 Teaching we had, when we looked at the design and planning of a new range. We are now planning and discussing how to put this theory into practice. Planning and time frames are discussed to execute the patterning that the client has asked for.
An unexpected order has come through in studio which must take priority. So there is a bonus addition. We are expecting the fabrics and paints from our young designer this week so the focus will be on his bespoke design and what do we need to get ready to start the large format printing for him. During the first half we look in depth at the planning & design process and in the next half we discuss the process followed to get the print room and supplies ready. We will discuss what dilutions to use for the size and what the process of pre-treatment of his fabrics will involve. We look at how to assemble your tray and ways to DIY. Larissa shows and tells with her own variety of trays in studio and ways to accessible your own or where to get and why. We discuss various industries and even climb into potassium and natural pigments for fabric marbling. We discuss the fabric fibers in depth and the differences in results one could obtain by changing the paints or treating the fabric differently while printing. What would I recommend you get in studio to do production work etc? We are working according to accurate spec given by our client for design and of colour way. Which options can we give our client for them to select just the right design for their collection and then how will we duplicate this pattern when in production later? During the class we look closer at all the fabric testing we have done over the last month. Which fabrics are In for current projects and which are Out? Which would yield a better result if we changed the paint or pre treat the fabric differently? We will look at the suminagashi created on our outing up to the rock pools in the mountain and the interesting effects nature offered. More rusting has been done so there will be a quick show and tell to explain what happens when fabrics or blankets have direct contact with the oxide. TAKE NOTE: We are building up to our interactive marbling session of larger fabrics according to planned design which will happen on Sunday 10th January.
